About taking anti depression tablets for too long
I agreed to my father to visit a psychiatrist at last. I remember my last time
visit to a psychiatrist was 5 years ago when I broke up with a girl in my
college. That time the psychiatrist doubled the dose of the anti depression
medicine that I was taking since a year. The first doctor prescribed me the anti depression
tablet to the 20mg but I was taking 10mg by myself and everything was fine till the breakup. So I had to listen to the doctor as the 10mg wasn't working anymore. I
had a concept about taking the medicines that I can’t stop when I want. But the
concept changed today when I visited a doctor again after five years.
Five years ago the Dr doubled the dose because I wasn’t
taking the prescribed amount that was 20mg. Since then in five years I tried
some experiments to lower the dose to check what the lowest amount I needed was.
And till today I was taking 20mg for almost 2 years.
The doctor I visited today asked me what was the problem and
why I had been taking the anti depression tablet? I replied the doctor that I
had migraine six years ago and that’s why since then I had been taking the
medicine.
Doctor told me this is not the medicine for migraine. I told
him before that I was taking medicines for only my migraine problem but it had
huge side effects like I was gaining weight and feeling weakness. But when the
first doctor who prescribed the anti depression medicine since then I never felt my problem again. And I have no complains about any weakness or gaining weight. Rather I became a better sorted out person.
Listening this, doctor asked few questions about my behavior
to me and my father. I and my father checked yes to most of them. Then the
doctor told me that it is the part of the disease that I have. And he also told
me that I should have come for treatment much earlier. I shouldn’t have
continued the medicine for so long without consulting a doctor. He increased my
dose by 10mg. So I have to take total 30mg of the same medicine. He prescribed
the same medicine as it has suited me. He told, “For a certain time we need to
do aggressive treatment till you get fully recovered. But if this medicine
doesn’t work then we have to go for different one.”
I asked him how long I should continue taking the medicine. My
doctor told, “When you will be recovered fully then I will minimize the dose to the lowest."
One thing I learnt today that is I should have consulted a
doctor on regular basis. I shouldn’t take any medicine too long without
consulting a doctor.
