My first day in Durgapur

Six months ago when I first came to Durgapur then I had no idea where to stay. My joining in the company was on 26th April just two days after.

For accommodation I planned to stay in a PG that was very close to my office. So I paid advance booking amount there.

After that I saw another opportunity, a budget rental house close to my office.

I had to take a decision whether to stay in PG or a rental house.

In my opinion I don't like to share rooms with strangers. As a corporate employee the PG was providing me with a single bed room only for myself with attached bathroom plus breakfast, lunch, tiffin and dinner.

The package wasn't too bad I had to pay almost 8000 monthly. Food + accommodation that is what I needed. I am very bad at cooking and cleaning myself. It was a disaster when I moved to Kolkata in 2019 for two months.

Also read my Kolkata story.

According to me in rental house I get more freedom and flexibility than a PG. Also my plan was to take my wife and seven month old son here in Durgapur after a month or two.

The rental house I found in magic bricks was in budget only 3300 per month. I called the number. It was not broker I was talking with one relative of the house owner.

Though I paid the booking amount to the PG then also I decided that I will first go and check the rental house first and if possible I will go for it. Because I can't stay in PG with my family.

On Saturday evening I reached Durgapur station from there I took a bus to city center. I had a concept that city center is a shopping complex like Kolkata and Siliguri. But in Durgapur the city center is an area.

I got down from the bus at city center bus stand. From the map I checked the location of the rental house. It was near kobiguru vegetable market. The distance by walking from the station was showing about 15 minutes. I had luggages so I reserved a toto to kobiguru vegetable market.

My plan A was to check the rented house first and if I find it better then I would take it else I would go to the PG.

I called the contract person after reaching the location and she gave me the number of the house owner. I called him and told him that I wanted to take the rent. but he said that the house is not available someone else took it.

I became very disappointed and also thought to check more rental houses in that area. My father also advised me on phone to book a hotel for a night and find other rental rooms. So I decided to check other rental houses in budget, if I don't get any then I will move to PG.

I started checking hotels and found out that almost all hotels' starting price was 1300 to 1500 per night for single bed room. There were no budget hotels in city center area.

My phone's battery was dying and I had to take decision as soon as possible. I called the PG and asked for location. I told them that I was coming. They guided me the location over the phone. Suddenly another call came from the rental room owner and told me that the room is available.

I was walking towards the PG that was almost 10 minutes walking distance from the rental house. I was with the luggage. Again I went back in front of rental house walking with the luggage.

I was very interested about the rental house for the following reasons,

1. I was dealing with the owner not broker.

2. Rent was only 3300.

3. 10 minutes walking distance to my office.

4. I can bring my family next month.

5. I can come to house for lunch when my wife will be here.

From my previous bitter experience in kolkata I didn't want my room to be in such distance from office.

The financial mistakes I did in kolkata during my stay.

Why rental house or PG should not be in distance from office?

Most people do this same mistake like I did in kolkata. When I started working in sector v in a international call center that was my first time outside my town.....
