Durgapur women's college placement drive program

Today I went to Durgapur Women's College with my colleagues. I didn't know before that I was going. Yesterday it was decided that I would stay at office and other members will go. But today when I reached at office then my center in charge asked me whether I was interested going to the college for placement program.

I told him that doesn’t matter whether I stay at office or I go to the college, I have no problem with both. But he started asking me whether I want to go or not. Then I replied ok I will go.

All the team members from our office except our center head reached at Durgapur Women’s College at around 12 PM.

I rode with one of my colleagues in a scooty. I really enjoyed riding scooty here in Durgapur. It is not that I am riding two wheeler for first the time. I am riding bike and scooty since I am 15. We have two scooty and one bike at our house at Malda. But here in Durgapur I stay in a rental house. It feels really different and new to me to ride in a new city when I don’t know the roads.

The program started at 12:30. We went to the seminar hall. It was a large hall with the capacity of 150+ students. The room was packed and all the seats were full of students.

One of our senior team members started with his speech and followed by one by one soft skills trainers. I was wondering when my turn will come then which part I will focus on.

My turn came and I moved to the stage. Starting with greetings I focused on their mindset about job. I asked them whether they wanted a job after graduation. Almost 80% students said yes and raised their hands. Then I asked, “How many of you want a govt job.” Again maximum number of students raised hands. After that I asked, “How many of you want a job in private sector?”

In my surprise only 5% of students raised hands this time.

So I decided to tell them a story about an employee who started his career at the age of 35. I told them how he couldn’t get chance in SSC after several times attempt. And how depressed he was because of that. Whan in the other hand one of his younger brother was getting a handsome salary in a private sector and holding a good position in the company. That younger brother of him was less educated than him. But he started his career earlier and didn’t wait for a govt job.

I also told them when someone starts his career in private sector they had to start will very less salary because of no experience. But with time and experience one day he becomes very valuable for any company.

In my speech I also focused on whether they are really ready to crack interview questions. I asked them how many of them really know Excel and its formulas. No one raised hands this time from students. I asked them how many of them can prepare a PPT on a topic. Less than 10 students raised hands. Then I asked those students can you come over stage and present your presentation through projector when very important clients are sitting in front of you. They put down their hands.

I also focused on soft skills also and why it is very important beside domain knowledge. I wanted to talk on more topics but I didn’t want to take any longer so I closed my speech.

After a long time I got another chance to talk and influence lot of students. I really like talking in front of people in stage. It is a challenge to me how much I can connect with the audience with my speech.

We distributed sweet packets to the students at the end of the program and returned office at 2:30 PM.
